IASTM

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation

IASTM is another option for treating pain and tightness in the body. By inducing an inflammatory healing response, the instruments

aid in the detection and treatment of fascial dysfunction. It is one of several manual therapy approaches that use instruments to perform a specialized type of massage/gentle skin scraping.

What is IASTM?

IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) is a type of manual therapy. Our providers use it to detect and treat scar tissue, restrictions, adhesions, trigger points, referred pain areas, chronic inflammation, and fibrosis. Clinicians typically use it to treat injuries or discomfort caused by joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia, and nerves.

IASTM, like other treatments, aims to reduce pain, improve mobility, and restore function that has been lost. It promotes a better healing environment and tissue remodeling in areas of soft tissue injury.

What does IASTM Feel Like?

The majority of the time, patients may feel their tissues slipping and shifting beneath the devices. The tissue has a "sandpaper" or "gritty" texture when operating on a trigger point or an area of fibrotic fascia, and the therapy may result in warmth and moderate redness. Patients who receive IASTM Technique treatment report feeling the affected area release, and the tissues often relax and start moving more freely.

Is IASTM Used as a Stand-Alone Treatment?

IASTM is often used by Bodyworks and Rehab to treat patients as part of a holistic plan rather than as a stand-alone treatment. To help your complaint get better as quickly as possible, further treatments can include involve stretching or corrective exercises, dry needling, or both.

We offer 10-minute consultations with our experts to address your questions if you have any regarding IASTM and to determine whether it would be the best course of treatment for you.
